An all-party meeting, spearheaded by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and the leader of the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), MK Stalin, decided to move to the Supreme Court against the second phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list, going to be implemented in 12 states and union territories, including Tamil Nadu.
Sharing the decision of the all-party meeting, Stalin wrote on X that the real intention behind the SIR is to take away the democratic rights of the people, and hence, it is the responsibility of all political parties to stand up against the process.
“It is the duty of all parties to unite and raise their voices against the #SIR being hastily implemented with the intent of snatching away the voting rights of the people of Tamil Nadu and murdering democracy,” the Tamil Nadu CM shared on X.
In addition to this, the DMK leader also suggested that the Election Commission of India should conduct countrywide revisions to voter lists by taking adequate time after the 2026 state election.
“Regarding the confusions and doubts in the voter list revisions – since our demand that they should be conducted after the 2026 general elections with adequate time and without any issues has not been accepted by the #ECI, we have passed a resolution in today’s all-party meeting to approach the Supreme Court,” Stalin further added.
He also thanked all the parties that joined the meeting and extended their support in the fight against the SIR.
“I express my thanks to the leaders of the 49 parties who participated in the all-party meeting and registered their feelings. I request those who did not participate in this meeting to discuss #SIR in their parties and take initiatives to protect democracy,” the CM further wrote.
Although the meeting registered the participation of 48 other parties apart from the DMK, actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) stayed away from it. The absence sparked a scuffle between the DMK and the TVK, with both blazing their guns at each other.
Slamming the absence of the TVK, the DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan said that the TVK missed the meeting as it did not want to make the BJP angry.
Ruling out DMK’s allegations, the TVK criticised the DMK for not passing a Kerala-like resolution against the SIR in the assembly. The party also called the all-party meeting a diversion from real issues.
The TVK earlier issued a statement against the SIR, warning people about its ‘real motives.’
Meanwhile, a case is underway in the Supreme Court against the first phase of SIR, which was implemented in Bihar.
