In a key development in the Durgapur case, police have arrested the prime accused, who was named in the complaint filed by the survivor’s father. The accused, identified as the survivor’s male friend, was taken into custody on Monday evening.
According to officials, the survivor’s Section 164 statement indicated that she was raped by the accused after going out with him, leading to his arrest.
Police confirmed that the accused will be produced before the court tomorrow morning. Further investigation into the case is underway.
TOTAL ARREST REACHES TO 5
With this, the total number of arrests in the case has risen to five. Police said the investigation has established the presence of all five accused at various stages of the incident. The latest arrest follows the survivor’s detailed statement, which helped investigators connect key events leading up to the assault.
POLICE BRIEFING AND KEY FINDINGS
Addressing a press briefing, Sunil Kumar Chowdhury, Police Commissioner of the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate, said that the probe is ongoing and the presence of all five arrested accused has been established during the investigation.
“The mobile phone of the victim has been recovered. We have also collected the clothing and physical appearance details of her friend. Our team visited the crime scene with the victim’s friend, and a reconstruction of the incident has been conducted,” Chowdhury said.
He added that based on the victim’s statement and initial physical evidence, it has been established that only one person sexually assaulted the medical student. “Forensic and medical reports are awaited. The role of the victim’s friend also appears doubtful, and he remains under the scanner,” the commissioner said.
GANG RAPE CHARGES RULED OUT
Police have ruled out gang rape charges, clarifying that so far, the evidence supports the involvement of a single perpetrator. “As per the survivor’s own account and supporting physical evidence, one person committed the rape. We are examining all aspects and interrogating all arrested individuals,” Chowdhury added.
Investigators have also collected and sent the clothes of one accused to the forensic laboratory for examination. The police maintain that further action will depend on the outcome of forensic and medical reports currently awaited.
