Democrats scored a string of election victories on Tuesday, sweeping major contests in New Jersey, Virginia, and Ohio.
In New Jersey, Democrat Mikie Sherrill defeated Republican Jack Ciattarelli, a Trump-backed candidate, to become the state’s next governor, according to a CNN projection.
In Virginia, Democrat Abigail Spanberger won the gubernatorial race, defeating Republican Winsome Earle-Sears to become the state’s first woman governor. Democrat Ghazala Hashmi also captured the lieutenant governor’s seat, NBC News projected.Hashmi, who is of Indian origin, became the first Muslim woman elected to a statewide office.
In Ohio, Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval won reelection over Cory Bowman, the half-brother of Vice President JD Vance. Bowman, a political newcomer, was seen as a long shot in the heavily Democratic city.
The results are a shot in the arm for Democrats and an early signal of voter sentiment less than a year into President Donald Trump’s second term.
