Video: Trump does his iconic dance as he arrives in Malaysia for Asean summit

US President Donald Trump broke into a brief dance to the tune of Hawaii Five-O after landing in Malaysia on Sunday, marking a lively start to his multi-nation Asian tour.

As Air Force One touched down at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Trump was welcomed with military honours, a Malaysian fighter jet escort, and a sea of waving US and Malaysian flags. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim greeted the American leader on the tarmac along with several cabinet ministers and senior officials.

Trump surprised the crowd when he joined a group of traditional Malaysian dancers performing near the red carpet. He waved his arms to the beat, smiled widely, and even took two small flags from the audience, waving them before posing for pictures. Anwar, smiling, joined Trump, drawing cheers from onlookers.

After the impromptu moment, Trump entered his car with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to head to the ASEAN summit venue.

The visit marks Trump’s first stop on a regional tour aimed at reviving trade talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping and boosting US engagement in Asia. “We will be signing the Peace Deal immediately upon arrival,” Trump said earlier on social media, referring to a ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia that he helped broker.

During his Malaysia stop, Trump is scheduled to attend the ASEAN summit, a meeting he skipped multiple times in his first term, and sign a bilateral trade deal with Malaysia. He is also expected to meet Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on the sidelines of the summit.

Before arriving in Kuala Lumpur, Trump met Gulf leaders during a refuelling stop in Qatar, one of the guarantors of the Gaza ceasefire deal initiated by Washington.

After Malaysia, Trump will travel to Japan to meet new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, followed by a high-stakes meeting with Xi Jinping in South Korea aimed at resolving the ongoing US-China trade war.

A possible meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has not been ruled out. South Korea’s reunification minister said there was a “considerable” chance, while Kim has indicated he is “open” to meeting Trump if Washington eases its stance on denuclearisation.
